Unfitted Kitchens

I have finally come across the name for the style of kitchen I love and the style of kitchen that I have in my home , until I read Deborah's blog here and here at Continental Calliope.

Of her *Flea-Market* kitchen she says :

"Every room of our re-modeled farmhouse has been built, retrofitted or embellished with flea market & salvage finds. No room more than our "unfit" kitchen. We had no desire or budget for custom cabinets, so Hubs built my fabulous kitchen with a mix of "finds". He scoured, flea markets, tag sales, salvage yards & even traded with friends who had found fabulous stuff.
The "unfit" kitchen-look, isn't for everyone, but it suits us to "T" & I. LOVE. IT!"

That's important because for the last 13 plus years I have been longing for that picture perfect kitchen. Our kitchen is truly the heart of our home. It is an eat-in kitchen (we have no formal dining area in this house) and for years it was not only the place to cook and eat; it was a place where our children did their schooling (we home schooled our children) ...and fondly it has been a gathering place for our family and our friends to visit, to play games, to sit and tell stories and to watch our children and now our grand-children grow! I love my kitchen and the relationship I have with it.

But I haven't ever liked it for the way it was ...until now!

I have an 'Un-fit' Kitchen!
My family would probably read this and say... "No Kiddin'? Look who just caught up!"

But this is news to me. I'd not heard of this term before. But now after finding out it has a name and that it takes years to tweak-- well all of the sudden it makes my kitchen look and feel like something special.

Oh, don't get me wrong. My kitchen is not perfect. It isn't showroom ready by any means. In fact when you look here and read this post you'll know exactly what I mean. Foolishness and Mayhem!

Those pictures are dated in that post-- and well, it is taking me this long to get down and dirty and start an overhaul. After looking around at some of the posts I see in blog-land, from time to time I wanted a picture perfect kitchen...But not anymore! I can finally say I can live with my 'un-fitted' kitchen.

But first things first.

I'm starting with the cleaning and then I'll get to the overhauling.

I hope to post pictures as they come. I don't want picture taking and blogging to come in the way of getting the work done. In the mean time this link has some pictures of 'un-fitted' kitchens (here)

It is hard to find posts regarding this particular topic... the above post is from the UK they have the best ideas / elements in an unfit kitchen. The thing with 'unfitted' is no two kitchens are just alike---EVER!

That's it. Let me know any thoughts you may have on "un-fitted" kitchens. If you find any links with pictures... hook me up!

Apron - Gift

I needed to make a gift for a young girl recently turning 13. She loves to cook and she loves to wear aprons this is what I came up with. I went to the thrift store and bought this old *80's model peg/mug holder.

You can see in this picture it is blue w/ geese and I think a peach or something on it. Quite outdated.

I brought it home. Painted it Ivory/white and shabbied it up a bit. I used my computer and made a scrap that said " Aprons" on it.

Mod Podged that onto the ceramic goose tile and well take a look. I like the way it turned out.

I also gave her an apron that my Great-Grandmother had made and tatted the edges. It was dark green. I didn't get a picture of that. But she loved it. She is a special young lady and this party was in honor of her 13 birthday.

She loved the apron and the Apron Hook.

This is a first for me I'm gonna try to link this to Funky Junk's Saturday Nite Special...

If you've looked around my blog at all

...you've probably noted it isn't much to look at right now.

There isn't much to read and there is a lot to do around the home.

I love blogging. I love reading other peoples blogs. Most recently -- I've loved reading home decorating- homemaking, crafty at home , DIY types of blogs. I've not ever worked (for any lengthy time) outside the home; and staying home and taking care of business here has always been a blessing.

However, I've had my hands full with so much, and have let things get out of sorts around here the last couple of years.

Now, with the empty nest, grand-kids, and most recently an elderly, very ill and dying mother -in-law ; I've had a difficult time gaining some traction. I recently found out that I'm anemic and in need of medical attention myself. There are procedures to be had and steps left to be taken. If not for the LORD, I'd most positively lost my way.

I'm at the stage in my life where I'd like to set things in order. Starting first with my dis-orderly home. (Nothing slaps you in the face harder than walking through a recently deceased loved-ones home; scanning each room taking mental snapshots of things left behind, guessing presumptuously what those items meant to them and will you find a new place for it?)

I ask myself...

How did it get this way?

Where did all this stuff come from?

Where are the children that used to fit these clothes?

When will I ever get to read those books?

Wonder where my crochet hooks went ?

It is a slow process. I realize that my house didn't get this out -of- whack over night. It is just going to take some time. Right now, I am just taking it one day at time.

Recently, my oldest daughter asked me how I was feeling. I told her "better". She said , "Well, you're certainly being productive around the house, getting some things done." I admitted to her that " I just have to make myself do them."

I'm taking baby steps. I think that I used to live by this verse:

"She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." Proverbs31:27

But the Truth is, I've always lived by it. The difference for me is those affairs are ever changing; and what might have been a priority then is becoming less of one and home keeping is what God in His Sovereign Grace is bringing me back to now.

My first NEW Post-

After a time of reflection...
I'm starting from scratch.

I'm taking what I have at the moment and using it to the best of my God- given ability. To do all these things as unto the LORD;

In my home, in my life, in my marriage-- in the lives of others (those whom I believe God has placed in my life)

That is the point of this blog-- writing those things down that are the experiences of my life and who I am!
That is why the title, 'Corn in my Coffee Pot'-- taking what I've been given and using it.

My Granny used to say:

Use it up,
Wear it out;
Make it do-
or do without!

This is me, doing just that.

I'm excited to meet you and have you visit my blog

Welcome!
