Way to Hide the Trash~~~

Looking for the perfect trash can concealment?

I am.

When I was growing up as a kid, we had our trash here...similar to this photo...AND! in a brown paper bag.

Years later we quit having it under the sink and began just having it sit in the kitchen ...sort of out of the way. Like this. OH.MY.GOSH. somebody took a picture of the trash in my house when I was growing up and posted it on the internet .... YEARS DECADES LATER!

Well, guess what. That's how I have my trash  TRASH CAN now. ONLY WITHOUT IT SPILLING ONTO THE FLOOR. I JUST HAVE THE CAN SITTING THERE, NEXT TO THE DEEP FREEZE, RIGHT OUT IN THE OPEN.  I've had it that way for 16 1/2 years. I've always thought I  should maybe have it under the sink, since there was no pantry closet to hide the taller can. (which is where I had it in my previous house.) Come to think of it; having the trash in a pantry where you keep the food sounds really gross. But, if it's the only place, what do you do?

So, I've been looking at solutions for hiding the trash can and the trash.
This is what I've found. Thought I'd share it.

Tall, pretty wicker hamper. Nice.

Vintage shopping buggy/stroller with burlap liner. Unique.

Grain bin. Very Farmhouse feeling.

This one is SO PRETTY. Just a plain trash can...only not so plain!

Complete with trash can scrunchy!

love them all!
All clever ideas... and so much prettier than just having a can sitting out.
I'm also thinking of having something so that I can easily sort our tin and glass... we burn our trash, unless there is a burn ban; so you can imagine the burn barrel gets filled up pretty quickly if we fill it with tin and glass.
Where do you keep your trash can? Is it in plain view? Hidden under the sink or in the pantry?
Or do you have your trash can cleverly disguised like these lovely examples?

Give a 3 Year Old a Camera~~~

There is just no telling what you'll see when you scroll through the photos-- She is just over 2 feet tall so keep in mind her perspective.

 The Nugget close up.

Chickens in the yard.

Her action shot of  The Nuggets.

Her objects of art!

Her Garden Pad.

Her self- portrait.

I actually took this picture at the onset of all these photos-- she was instructing us to "Sit together, okay?, ...so I can take your picture."

We are obedient subjects. :)

...and then Audrey Hen Photo bombed our picture!

Utter silliness really.
But I wanted you to see for yourself--all the fun we have when 'The Little's' come to Oma's and Honey's house!

BIG, BIGGER, BIGGEST-

A few weeks back-- before I took my little blog-cation--- I asked you 'what you thought this bloom may be?'

Most of you were right it was a squash... Zucchini Squash.

The BIGGEST ZUCCHINI SQUASH this girl has ever grown!!!!!!

No kidding, the one in the fore-ground the size of a football.  I wish I HAD  a foot ball so I could show you... but believe me--
---IT IS  HUGE!
These were grown on the HUGELKULTURE MOUND IN THE KITCHEN GARDEN. With little to no effort. We've had good rain and mild temps; with lots of sun!
They are delicious too.
We're still getting zucchini and cucumbers from there. We have corn growing out there, but I'm afraid we won't yield much there -due to high winds and ...dun,dun,duh....
grasshoppers. Yes! they're back!
The front beds are doing better-- the chickens are keeping most of them (grasshoppers) away. Up front, we have tomatoes, okra, pepper plants (no peppers yet), cantaloupe, spinach -- the first batch bolted already, the second batch is still going strong; as well as, the lettuce. I started carrots and beets late-- we'll see what we get.

Country Road Traffic

I don't like driving anymore than I have to; if I can keep from it- that's even better. So you can guess-- I don't get out much-- but you knew that already,  especially if you've been reading my blog for any amount of time.

Surprisingly,I DO LIKE watching the traffic.  We get A LOT OF TRAFFIC on OUR a little country road-- South West of *small town,USA* --
Our road is what we call a DEAD-END ROAD;ONE WAY IN AND ONE WAY OUT.

Every once in a great while something will come down my road that puts a smile on my face.
Unlike most of the traffic- it's UNEXPECTED; and there I am caught unaware in the front yard without a camera--

If I'm fortunate enough to grab the camera-- I can get shot of them leaving.

'bye! Y'all come back now, ya hear?'

Bad Egg UPDATE--

Hi All! Thanks so much for the feed back about my 'bad egg'-- the crazy looking one.

I've done some research myself and am thinking like everyone else it's a calcium deficiency. I had been pretty diligent to give them crushed eggshells before, but I guess dealing with the NUGGETS and having them ALL free ranging IN THE SAME AREAS-  I forgot about doing this. 100_0491
Too much calcium for young chickens can also create problems with their kidneys and do damage I was trying to avoid. So now I'm back to putting it in the chicken coop only.

I believe I've narrowed it down to who may be the culprit of the 'thin shelled' eggs. It's Gracie; the other half to my pair-  George and Gracie. She is the smallest of my Barred Rock chickens, although I got her at the same time and she HAS GIVEN EGGS BEFORE with no problems. She's been laying in the box a lot. At times her comb seems a little pale too. I am not so sure that the missing feathers is molt as much as it's just George being aggressive.

Here she is on a good day!

A Couple of Cracked Pots--

Not to be confused with a couple of 'crack-pots' --- a.k.a.  :)

So last Friday, May 18th 2012...  my daughter tells me that her sister in law has moved and they've cleaned up around the new place and had some junk they wanted to get rid of  "Did she know anybody interested in old junk?"
Again....:)
Me! to the rescue. Just call me Rescuer of Old Junk. Here's what I  received as my prize...

  • 1 cracked pot -- held together with wire and complete with a hanging Tri-pod!  and extra long cool chain.

  • 1 busted up and rusted pot....complete with

...a Bolted on Weird Looking Lid thing-
.... a bolted on handle ...for what?  I don't know!
  • and 2 holes that go 'clean through'... you can see the light on the other side!
To which my husband asked... Don't we have enough cracked pots around here?  What on earth will you do with them? :D  He'll see... and so will you ...soon.

  • I also was given these rusted old, paint chipping hanging planters.
Now, did I get myself to the nursery or even to the Hardware store for plants, moss, and potting soil this weekend?
NO. I didn't.
But it's coming and when you see it ... You'll be surprised!  I promise.

Bad Egg?

Yesterday we were gone most of the day and into the early hours of the morning today. So when I went out to the coop this morning;  I collected 5 eggs.

Nothing unusual there. Five eggs is about average. Our Five older hens lay about once a day.
But there was something strange with one egg-- I don't know if you can tell by the photo or not; but it is oddly shaped almost flat on one side and it has 'RIPPLES' around the edges of the flat part.

When you tap on a normal egg you get a solid TAP,TAP,TAP.
Not this one. When you tap on it- you get a slightly high toned---tink,tink,tink. Like Crystal or glass for sure.
I'm not sure if it will be good to eat since the make up of the shell is different. A chickens egg is created in such a way to protect it naturally without any preservatives-- keeping the freshness locked inside, sort of like a zip lock baggie!  That is why it is not recommended to wash them but to wipe them gently with a soft brush or dry cloth before storing.
  • Have any of you ever seen such a thing?
  • What do you suppose it means, regarding the health of my chicken?
  • I need to do some research- I'm wondering if perhaps one of my chickens was 'egg bound' or what?
  •   I haven't cracked it yet. What do you think, would you eat it?
  •  Any tips or ideas?

Widow Maker? No! Says I.

Today has been a year since The Honey had a heart attack. I'm Thankful to God to have him here and that he has and is continuing to recover.
Thank you to You, my readers for all your prayers and support during the last year!

This was Friday Nite at the Spring Fling at Solar Screens in Gun Barrel City,TX.  My Son, Son-in law, and daughter all work there. This was a customer appreciation party... good times!

Morning Cup-

Howdie Y'all!

Still here. I've been away from blogging a few weeks. Been pretty busy-- think of you often! I've been doing some gardening, a few projects here and there, traveling back and forth to Temple to the V.A.hospital (think we're just about done with all that!) ...over-all, just taking it easy!
